IEC 60204 – Safety of machinery – Electrical Equipment of Machines Overview

IEC 60204 is your primary electrical standard for electrical machinery for industrial uses. Best cases are to design to this standard and to NFPA 79, both are closely similar. If you design to these standards, and any product specific standard you will be 10000% better off at the end. IF you fail to specifically design to a standard how will the equipment ever get to market and pass testing?

I like to use the analogy of chocolate chip cookies. My favorite is Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies, and I do follow the recipes precisely to get a good end result, your end product. So, let’s say you are going to enter a Toll House Chocolate Chip baking competition. Much like you are competing against many variables in business. If you don’t follow a recipe, (a specific certification scope and product safety standards) you will get a varied and likely unsuccessful result. Like once I put sugar in the batch of cookies and so did Mark, a high school buddy, well that did not work. These cookies never expanded and never did rise up and were more like bad toffee. Also baking cookies just like someone did at their last job is also a problem, what if that engineer worked in a ginger bread factory? Well you are likely going to get something between ginger bread and toll house cookies, and while that might work out, who knows? One thing for sure they won’t be Toll House cookies, what you are aiming for as an end product.

So, let’s bake the best possible cookies, I mean product for you with our conformity discovery process, you will learn by scoping which standards apply, and how close your design is to those standards, saving you $100,000s of dollars and months of redesign. And what’s worse if you miss your team will be bummed, so will management. Let’s bake some products.

Toll House Chocolate Chip is a trade name and a registered trade mark of the owner, would be cool if they sent me some… mmm cookies….

Today our CEO, Steve Barcik Amstel shares insights with you about IEC 60204. It is the electrical requirements for industrial equipment. IEC 60204 has all the electrical requirements within it that will need to be included in your Design and considered during design reviews and product safety reviews so that your industrial equipment and the electrical portions of it meet the requirements and can be CE marked and/or listed and labeled as required. It is crucial that your product and your product design process include this standard so that at the end you have a high level of confidence that your equipment will pass scrutiny…will pass evaluation and test and be listed and labeled at the end of that process.

IEC 60204 relies on a multitude of additional standards to pull in specific requirements for other hazards within your equipment…whether it is temperature…high temperature…lasers…or other types of equipment and hazards. They will be related to 60204.

In the future we will provide a training series on IEC 60204 that will allow you to fully understand the standard and then incorporate that into your product development cycle, your design reviews, and your product safety reviews.

EC 60204-1:2016 is available as IEC 60204-1:2016 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.

IEC 60204-1:2016 applies to electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment and systems to machines not portable by hand while working, including a group of machines working together in a coordinated manner. The equipment covered by this part of IEC 60204 commences at the point of connection of the supply to the electrical equipment of the machine. This sixth edition cancels and replaces the fifth edition published in 2005. It constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
– added requirements to address applications involving power drive systems (PDS);
– revised electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements;
– clarified overcurrent protection requirements;
– requirements for determination of the short circuit current rating of the electrical equipment;
– revised protective bonding requirements and terminology;
– reorganization and revision to Clause 9, including requirements pertaining to safe torque off of PDS, emergency stop, and control circuit protection;
– revised symbols for actuators of control devices;
– revised technical documentation requirements;
– general updating to current special national conditions, normative standards, and bibliographical references.
