Each year, we at High Tech Design Safety meet with well over 100 equipment and product engineers and managers with respect to their product certification needs. And because so many folks know our thoughts and feelings (from this website) on all things “Product Safety”, they often ask us who are some of the other evaluators and competitors we have in the area. Please note that in all cases we will act as your in-house product safety team and managers and work with the below labs to get your product completed, additionally we stand in the gap with knowledge to accelerate your program through these labs if that’s the route that needs to be taken. Often products do not need to go through these labs or can take another alternative and more expedient route to certification, you are fortunate to have someone to take that on for you.

Never ones to shy away from being blatantly honest with respect to competition, and wanting our customers to be as informed as possible, here is a list of some of the companies that have a solid product certification history:

1. Underwriters Laboratory: Having been around for years, UL is located in the Illinois, and are a broad product certifications laboratory. The company also installs fiberglass pools, and has a heavy emphasis on automatic pool cover installations.

2. Intertek: Operated out of the European Union. Intertek has offices in the USA, They also are a broad product certification laboratory.

3. TUV: Is operated out of Germany and has labs and offices here in the USA and also is a broad certification laboratory..

4. MET Labs: Operated out of the northeastern United States MET labs is a more narrowly focused product certification lab, and has offices in test facilities in several states..

So here are 4 companies to consider if you’re getting quotes for your Product safety and certification project. As we have stated many times before on this site, the key to a great experience in your Certification effort is two-fold:

Next we will determine the standards, jurisdictions, and locations that you wish to ship the equipment to, identify the standards, testing, and the scope of the project.

How long does it take to get the CE marked? how long does it take to get UL listed? how long does it take to get to FCC testing???

How Long Does it take?
This, is always one of the second questions asked when starting a product conformity project. And here at High Tech Design Safety, we have a process to move you through as fast as you are ready to go.
Timeline depends primarily on three factors, readiness and fitness for certification, speed of replies to request informational requests, and the overall size of the project.
Our experience and process allows us to be fairly accurate in the timeline and takes to complete a project, there are those rare instances where a product is not designed specifically for certification and we must take time to iterate the design and get a new test sample, however those are only about 30% of our work.
Please remember, these timelines are AVERAGE, and can vary depending on the product to be tested and evaluated, the number and size of the standards required, and the actual hands on electrical and physical testing required, the regions, the company, etc, etc…
Just the Certification please
For a small product with 122 220 V and 15 to 20 A maximum:
For a customer that just wants to get the product CE marked. To do a one standard evaluation, is typically one week from delivery of the samples, materials and information. (Keep in mind this timeline does not include extra testing, iteration on design or other options:
One electrical standard For example IEC 60204 typically one week
Simple One Pass FCC testing for conducted radiated emissions: 4 weeks additional re-tests 1-2 weeks Consulting 1-2 weeks if required
SEMI S2 (single standard):typically two to three weeks including on site inspection if required, materials and information. Keep in mind this timeline does not include extra testing, iteration on design or other options:
Full CE Certification:
You have everything ready to go including bill materials, testing, manuals, labels, any calculations needed, and is the design and ready to go for CE testing, we will provide the evaluations, the EMC EMI evaluations and calculations as required, for electrical hazards and mechanical hazards only 4 weeks. Each additional each additional hazard increases the time by about a day or two

This, of course, is always one of the first questions asked when starting the research process for product conformity. And here at High Tech Design Safety, I’d imagine we receive this question hundreds and hundreds of times a year, likely within the first couple of minutes of any conversation.
But we get it. Price (along with many other factors) matters. And can certainly dictate what Certifications and what options you’re able to achieve in the long run.
As you might imagine though, the problem with answering this question is the fact that a Product safety certification has so many options it can be very tough for one to truly know what the price to Product safety certification will be. Notwithstanding, I’ll do my best here to give you some realistic price ranges as to what most people will spend. (And remember, these prices are AVERAGE, and can vary drastically depending on the product to be tested and evaluated, the number and size of the standards required, and the actual hands on electrical and physical testing required, the regions, the company, etc, etc)
Just the Certification please
Occasionally I’ll have a customer that just wants to get the product CE marked. Although there are many more costs involved with a Certification, there are people out there that want to do everything and Complete a single Certification individually. Therefore, the expected price range is as follows (Keep in mind these price ranges do not include extra testing, iteration on design or other options:
(For a small product with 122 220 V and 15 to 20 A maximum):
One electrical standard For example IEC 60204 $2995-$3950
Simple One Pass FCC testing for conducted radiated emissions: $4400-$5750 additional re-tests $1220-$1750 Consulting $1100
SEMI S2 (single standard): $12,000-$19,000 each additional hazard increases the price by $2200
Full CE Certification:
You have everything ready to go including bill of materials, testing data, manuals, labels, any calculations needed, and is the design and ready to go for CE testing, will provide the evaluations, the EMC EMI evaluations and calculations as required, for electrical hazards and mechanical hazards only, $4400-$5750 each additional hazard increases the price by $2200
